Semi Tractor-Trailer Accident Attorneys, Rockville MD

Serving Maryland and Washington, DC

If you have been injured in an accident involving a truck, you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries as well as for damages.  Every accident is different, so we offer a free consultation to evaluate your case.

Our attorneys are experienced trial lawyers — we will seek to obtain a fair insurance settlement for you but insurance companies know we are prepared to go to trial if necessary.  It is important that you contact an attorney before you accept an insurance settlement.  Insurance companies are businesses, not your legal advocates and will seek to pay least amount possible on accident claims.  Our attorneys are skilled in handling auto and truck accident claims and can almost always do better in settlements than an accident victim can do on their own.  For a free consultation, contact our Rockville law firm today.

Why Tractor-Trailer Truck Accidents Are So Deadly

When fully loaded, a tractor-trailer truck can weight 10, 20 or even 40 times as much as a single car. The sheer size and weight of tractor trailers makes accidents involving these trucks especially deadly.

Tractor-trailer drivers who drive at unsafe speeds, drive while distracted (talking on a cell phone or fiddling with the radio) or operate their vehicles under the influence of drugs, alcohol or crushing fatigue put other drivers at risk. Car drivers who drive irresponsibly also put other drivers at risk, however a key difference between cars and large trucks is that the weight and bulk of a tractor-trailer truck can magnify even small errors of judgment leading to catastrophic accidents involving multiple vehicles.

Trucks cannot stop as quickly as cars, nor can they maneuver efficiently to avoid crashes. For this reason trucks can easily collide with another vehicle or sideswipe smaller cars, and they can “jackknife” or tip over, precipitating a chain-reaction collision involving multiple vehicles or truck underride accidents.

Numerous contributing factors can be involved in tractor-trailer truck accidents, and in some cases, parties other than the driver can be held accountable. For example, the owner of the truck is responsible for keeping the vehicle in good operating condition, paying special attention to its brakes, steering column and hauling rig, and the moving company must ensure that its drivers are properly trained and well-rested. In addition, the people who load the truck are responsible for firmly securing its contents, to prevent the truck’s load from spilling out onto a busy street or highway. Last but not least, he driver must follow all applicable traffic laws and not operate his truck recklessly or negligently.
